Put Solar on It: Mosaic

In 2014, will you put solar on it?

New Year’s Resolutions often require the hard work of changing habits, but one organization in the US is trying to encourage people to change a different kind of habit – your energy habit.

Mosaic, the company famous for crowdfunding solar panel projects across the country, is asking people to make the resolution to ‘Put Solar on It’ in 2014.

Led by environmental campaigner and actor Mark Ruffalo, the campaign asks you to commit to putting solar on something – your home, your school, place of worship, business or other and in return Mosaic will give you the tools to make the project happen. Ruffalo has committed to putting solar on his children’s elementary school this year and said he hopes it will free up school resources that would have been spent on power bills, but can now be spent on education.

Solar power and residential solar power have become both affordable and attractive over the past few years, with the cost of solar panels in the US dropping 60% from 2011 prices. Solar power also plays an important role in electrical grid resilience, with Brad Pitt’s NGO ‘Make it Right’ pledging to put solar on new affordable housing in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, an area still rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.

President Obama returned solar panels to the White House in 2013, and so far thousands of people have committed to putting solar on their houses, schools and businesses in 2014 by signing the pledge on the website and tweeting with the #PutSolaronIt hashtag.

In January, Mosaic was awarded $1million by Verizon for the ‘Powerful Answers Award’ which will allow the company to expand internationally as well as develop a mobile app, further gathering momentum for the solar power industry.
