On April 2, 2012 more than 500 Maryland residents gathered in Annapolis to communicate their desire for a clean energy future.
To show their support for the Maryland Offshore Wind Energy Act, participants circled the State House holding banners and in the evening, glowing wind turbine figurines. The event’s speakers included Governor Martin O’Malley, members of the General Assembly, and local residents who asserted that a wind farm off the coast of Maryland will protect public health, the environment, and national security, as well as be a source of new jobs and stabilized electricity rates. Presenters described the problems caused by coal-fired power plants, such as pollution and climate impacts like sea level rise, and emphasized the benefits of local, renewable energy.
The event was organized by Marylanders for Offshore Wind, a coalition of environmental, labor, faith, business, and community groups, including: Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Environment Maryland, Greater Washington Interfaith Power & Light, League of Women Voters of Maryland, Maryland League of Conservation Voters, National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club and the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Maryland. The coalition believes that Maryland can be a leader in a new clean energy industry.
